Corey Benjamin Gordon was born on November 20, 1970 the 7th child and baby boy to John C. Gordon and Verna L. Gordon at Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George‘s County, Maryland.  Corey was born with the skin decease of eczema and struggled must of his young life trying to grow up a regular kid.

In 1980, Corey with his mother and older siblings, relocated to Lake Charles, Louisiana from the Washington, D.C. area where he enrolled at Reynaud Middle School.  At school Corey made many friends and was loved by all.  He was given the nick name “DC” because of his east coast spirit.

Corey was a very athletic youth who loved to play all sports.  He played little league baseball, football and he also played basketball for Reynaud Middle School.  Corey was a very lovable, high energy kid who enjoyed playing the game.  He would always practice running, throwing and bouncing a ball in the front yard.  He was very competitive and always wanted to be a winner.  Most of all, Corey wanted to be a professional athlete in one of the many sports he played.  One of his favorite sports was basketball.

At the age of 14 year old, on February 1st,  1985 after playing basketball in the gym during school, Corey collapsed of an arrhythmia heartbeat and died at Reynaud Middle School gym.  One year after Corey’s death, his family hosted an adult men basketball tournament in his honor.  Even though, Corey only lived a short time, his quest, his courage, his determination, his desires to become a successful athlete is remembered by many of his friends and family.

In celebration of his life and support of his dreams to become a professional athlete, Sports II Basketball Academy founders will launch the Corey “DC” Gordon Memorial Academy Foundation founded on the continuation of the dreams of inspiring youth who love the game of sports with desires to go to college and become a professional athlete.

The Corey Gordon Memorial Academy Foundation will provide training, education, scholarship funding and donations for medical research of heart conditions often not detected in athletes. Additionally, the foundation will provide support and network services to families experiencing similar lost of a youth or teen.
